6 Tips to Increase Your Children's Exercise and Help Their Mental Health

Everyone knows that there is a significant connection between exercise and physical health, and now there is research showing a connection between exercise and mental health. The question then becomes, "How do we get our children and teens to exercise knowing it is so good for them?" Typically, younger children will get 30 minutes of exercise each day at school, but experts suggest that children get 60 minutes each day. Many teens get little or no exercise at all. As parents, we can encourage our children to get up and move, exercise, play and invigorate themselves, as this helps them to become healthier and happier in several ways.

Firstly, we can decrease screen time. Worrying about the amount of TV watched is ineffective if children then can turn their attention to a video game or computer. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that kids under age 2 have no screen time, and that kids older than two watch no more than one to two hours a day of quality programming. When a parent offers their child a different alternative, children will often choose the alternative.

Secondly, take them to the gym with you and be a role model. Kids learn best by seeing their parents doing something healthy for themselves. Most gyms and health clubs have different programs for children, depending on their age and fitness levels. A genuine accomplishment, such as running further or swimming better, builds self-esteem, having an immediate impact on positive mental health.

Thirdly, join team sports and activities like baseball, football, soccer, softball, swimming, and volleyball. These are leagues that are commonly found and with which children can participate in. When joining a team, adolescents and children learn teamwork, accomplishment, and gain physical benefits. There are many other activities that are beneficial, such as Girl Scouts, karate, geocaching, dance, and swim lessons, to name a few.

Fourthly, keep everything fun and entertaining; do not make exercise, play, or their activity or sport into a chore or obligation. They will notice your negative attitude and will likely quit the activity. Do not push them too hard. The idea is to just increase their physical exercise and help them to feel good. Let your child dictate the pace and what they want to do. A variety of sports, exercise, and physical activities can help you and your children learn what they are interested in, and may create a lifelong passion for physical activity.

Fifthly, buy and keep on hand balls, jump ropes, bats, beanbags, horse shoes or if possible, a bike. The possibilities are endless; the toys do not have to be used as intended, just used. When you play with your children, you are forging memories and strengthening your relationship. Get imaginative with the items and create different games: let your child make the rules. Make playing and exercising a family event.

Sixthly, send them outside and let them explore. Often kids will and can entertain themselves and stay physical if we as adults give them the chance. Set up a family calendar for days that, as a family, you all go to the park to have fun. When children can count down and know that they are going to do something fun, they can anticipate it and help hold the family accountable to exercising.

Lastly, remember how much fun simple games like freeze tag hide & seek, or red rover was? Now you can teach these games to your children and play as a family.

There has been much written about the connection between physical health and exercise, and now the connection between exercise and mental health is showing significance. Medical doctors recommend that children get 60 minutes of exercise per day and younger children only get about 30 minutes of exercise at school. Children can be more active and reap the benefits of exercise, such as improved self-esteem, learning to get along with peers, accomplishing a goal, and learning healthy life-long habits.

SATISFACTION

Watermelons are BACK!!! YEAH
What a fabulous word…YES…I would have to say that I am content with a lot of things.  I do not have to look for approval or contentment outside of myself, worrying about the whole “I am not good enough” thing.  Maybe, when I was younger and not older and wiser like today, I would run around trying to please everyone, and put my own feelings aside and even to a non boundary fault…YUCK YUCK…and OH did I say YUCK.  This journey I call life has blessed me with many discoveries of positive growth and has opened my eyes to seeing all that I have gone through as part of that process.  If you have read my bio, you can understand a bit of what I am talking about.

I want to really dig deeper into my satisfaction though as it relates to my fitness and maintaining ME at 48.  YES…I am serious about my health, maintain a good quality of life, and the outer shell benefits of that…of course…LOVE it.   I would not be truthful with you if I did not admit that.  The point I am trying to make is that I am content…I do not need to look further , to look better, to be thinner, to be leaner, to be more muscular…I am truly content with my work and maintenance feels over the top satisfying .  I can and do get satisfaction each day as I live being the BEST me with all my limitations…I am GOOD.

I have been around the block to hear and see so many people who are not happy even when they reach their goals and even living their goals…meaning a healthy lifestyle…it is still not enough.   It saddens me because that is a deeper issue…the one that haunts within, the one that may creep in from the past or be caused by the past or even the present.  Let me tell you being a positive advocate for counseling, therapy, and woman of strong faith …this would be the time to visit that part of life…to see what the heck is going on to cause such unhappiness and nonacceptance of self.  Been there, done that, and greatly appreciative of all that I have learned and having God on my side through the process…HIP HIP HOORAY, HEALED, and Happily Ever After Content!

Daughters are Fabulous
I look at myself and NO…no longer that 20 something that I see in both my daughter and stepdaughter…absolute peaches and cream skin beauties they are…WOW…I marvel in that for them.  But that is how it is supposed to be…48 comes with love lines, and battle scars that I have earned from my journey of life, having children,  surgeries, and the overall aging process…I mean really…am I supposed to look 20 something... A BIG NO…I am being real here…seriously…and I will not undergo any process on my face to take away the privilege and honor of being ME.  Will I do my BEST to be my BEST…of course…I am trendy, not frumpy, and love to feel sexy.  Being healthy satisfies all those things for me and that is who I want to be…ME.

I believe in the word “enough”, and when it comes to my fitness…it is good enough.  Satisfaction applies to so many things in my life…the contentment of being healthy is just a part of Darla…I do not believe that the grass is greener on the other side, wanting to outdo the “Jones’” , and that more is better.  I do believe in the saying “I may not have the best of everything but I make the BEST of everything I have”, that less is more, enjoying the simple things, in not sweating the small stuff, and in daily miracles.  It is important for me to feel satisfaction, contentment, and value every moment...If I did not do that…I do not think that life would make sense.  You may see Darla, the fitness expert, but let me introduce you to Darla, the satisfied person.

Exercise for Good Physical and Mental Health

When people think of good "health", they usually think about physical health. Then, they imagine tone muscles, firm abs and a good figure. Fitness freaks spend hours and hours a week working out. It's simple. To achieve a good physical health, you need to exercise. What people don't know is that exercise not only improves their physical health but also their mental health. A good exercise is not necessary done in the gym though.

According to some researchers, exercise has the same properties as antidepressants that give positive benefits on the brain. One research even showed how exercises improved the brain function of some elderly individuals. Due to the positive results in studies conducted, they have hypothesized that proper exercise may protect people from dementia, a condition of severe loss or impairment of one's intellectual capacity brought about by the damage of neurons in the human brain.

One possible explanation of the good effect of exercise on the brain is the release of endorphins during physical activity. Endorphins are the body's natural morphine to relieve pain as a normal response to shock that the body experience during exercise. On the other hand, other scientists are not satisfied to the explanation that endorphins alone provide the body the good benefits because they don't generally effect mood which is another beneficial effect of exercise. In some studies in animals, experiments have shown that the levels of several neurotransmitters increase during exercise. Antidepressants work by stimulating these neurotransmitters: serotonin, dopamine, GABA and norepinephrine. High levels of these chemicals are known to elevate the mood. In addition, during exercise, the levels of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) are also found to increase. This substance is also known to play a major role in improving one's mood and help the brain cells function longer. BDNF is thought to be the primary reason why exercise can help prevent dementia.

To summarize, exercise not only help improve physical but also mental health and brain. Exercising not only helps people achieve the body they want but also help make people feel good and improve their mood. Although there needs to be studies for more scientific explanation of how it works, it is best to start exercising today and feel good soon.

Balance, Life, and Vacation

On Vacation!
If you tuned into my last Blog, you may have figured out that I was going on vacation…well…I DID and had a blast…except for the nasty scrape and bruise to my bootie that I am still healing from …talk about a pain in the backside…YIKES…I will go more into that in a bit.  Let me just tell you that I am a simple gal and when it comes to our boat trips, I pack light because we are usually in swim suits most of the time, don’t wear makeup…don’t need it and rarely wear it anyway, lots of sunscreen…non-stinging waterproof please, Burt’s Bees lip balm, and my MUST have leave in spray conditioner to get out the tangles from lots of swimming;)…Woo Hoo that is what I am talking about…simplicity as it’s vacation BEST.

When Friday came, I took my watch off and did not concern myself with what time it was for one full week…no time constraint, no schedules…AHHH…such a free feeling to do whatever I wanted, when I wanted without hurry, deadline, and just reading my body for eating times and sleeping…and of course enjoying quality time with hubby, boating fun and the great outdoors.  It truly seems like life should be this simple, this stress free most of the time.  I think it is important to MAKE IT HAPPEN…to schedule those down time moments to really appreciate what life is all about…it is definitely not about the GO GO GO, and  DON’T STOP TILL YOU DROP life…NOT FOR ME.

One of our Coves
Deer Sighting!!!
Did I freak out knowing I was not going to be getting in my normal workouts…maybe at first and only for a second… this girl was ready to go.  Actually, I was looking forward to giving my body a rest, plugging into some meditation, being creative with active rest, and truly taking in LIFE.  Not that I do not do that on a daily basis, but sometimes, a deeper spending of time to appreciate everything around me is in order.  Also, taking a vacation is a good way to prevent burn out by taking a break from the things that are done day in and day out.  I come back with a renewed sense of being each time…I LOVE THAT.

Was I going to rebel and throw all my healthy philosophies out the window…of course NOT.  Was I going to provide leniency to enjoy things that I typically would not partake in moderation…a BIG YES!  Life is about balance, about living, about enjoying, about BEING REAL…that is who I am…REAL.  Please do not think that I am some super fitness freak who spends hours in the gym working out, and only eating boiled chicken, steamed broccoli and egg whites…WRONG.  Not to say that these items are not in my nutrition plan…but really…if you have seen my recipes, I am very much into great tasting food and lots of variety.  Our cooler was full of prepared meals of Quinoa with sun dried tomatoes, lean turkey meats, marinated chicken, spinach salad…you get the picture.  We did purchase some Organic Flax Meal Chips from Costco and I have to say…impressed with the quality.  Important to intake a little salt when spending time in the heat in addition to lots of water…so a few chips here and there fueled this water girl.

OUR FAVORITE LAKE SHASTA COVE THIS YEAR!

Trail to Water slide
We launched at Lake Shasta, one of our favorite spots to putt around, swim, and create our own adventures.  Each day, we did what we wanted and were active by taking in ½  to 1 mile swims each day, having pull up contests off the boat dive platform, and hiking around off shore.  Now…getting to the bootie injury…a few minutes of fun for over a week of discomfort…next time I am bringing on the Charmin...lol.  OK…we discovered a Natural Rock Water Slide that existed off one of the coves, and although a bit of a hike to get there…it was absolutely beautiful and tropical looking…so many pools surrounded by golden rocks…BREATHTAKING.  The end of paradise trail revealed the Rock Water Slide…well, a swim across the natural pool and climb up the rocks using a knotted rope was the only way to reach the top of the slide ... I admit I was a bit nervous...it was a thrill for sure...but...the OH NO ...bump bump bump…scraped my bootie on the rocks.

Water slide! I was able to find this pic online
Accomplished, but man did it tear a half dollar size deep raspberry on my tailbone area…talk about not being able to sit down for a week…there you have it…this bootie will definitely be padded next time.  I seemed to be the only one with the bootie problem as I asked others coming off the slide if they hurt their tailbone…no, no and no…hmmm…oh well.  I did witness people hiking all the way, and deciding not to try the adventure, but all was good fun…always about the journey.  My hubby went down about 3 times…I was happy with my one time adventure especially with my backside burning when it hit the water.

Coming back from vacation is always bitter sweet, but it does feel good to get home, sleep in my own bed, get my ground legs back, and return to my routine.  I do return with a renewed sense of self as I shared earlier, feeling content, happy, and even more creatively sparked.  I enjoy seeing my clients and firing up my oven for some healthy baking.  The point I am trying to bring home is not how I burnt my bum on the water slide, but how important it is to take a step back, slow things down, get out of a rut, change things up, have some fun, and just be free for awhile, even if it is for a day, or even a week.  I know that balance is important  to my successful and happy life, helps to reduce stress, enables me to clear my head, and spend quality time not only with me but the best part…spending time with my partner, friend, and love of my life.  Now that is FABULOUS in my Stay Healthy Book!

Physical Fitness and Mental Health and Wellbeing Are Closely Linked

We are all aware of the physical benefits of a structured exercise program. Stronger muscles, joints and bones, better body weight control, protection from disease and a slowing of the aging process. But we tend to think of fitness as stopping at the neck and it is easy to forget that our brain is the central processing unit for the systems and processes of the human body and its health is important for our well being.

Often our mental and emotional health is taken for granted and it is easy to believe that its well-being is out of our hands. But the fact is that our mental health is closely linked to our physical health and if you have physical ill-health you can have mental ill-health as well. Research is uncovering this link and the importance of physical activity as both a preventative and healing medicine for our mental and emotional heath and well-being.

It has been estimated that one person in every group of five people has a diagnosable mental disorder. This means approximately 20 percent of the population is experiencing symptoms of mental impairment. Mental illness is a bigger disease burden than that caused by all cancers put together and by 2020 is will be the highest cause of death and disability in the world.

The human body was build to be active - very active. Vigorous movement is the body's way of staying healthy as 'growth and repair' hormones are stimulated when our muscles are challenged regularly. Without these hormones chemicals tell the cells and tissues to decay, degenerate and die.

This is what happens when we live an inactive and sedentary lifestyle which 8 out of 10 people do. They do not get enough muscle building and maintaining activity to remain healthy and end up with a premature and preventable physical and mental disease.

When our body carries out the vigorous physical movement that we are designed to do it makes us feel good about ourselves as when we work our muscles natural chemicals are released that regulate and calm emotions, dissipating anxiety and stress. Proper exercise oils the wheels in our brain and boosts its activity affecting everything from the way we think, to how we feel and what we do.

If you are in a cycle of negative thoughts and worries you can use your exercise sessions as a distraction to take your mind off this pattern of behavior. Doing something positive to manage anxiety or depression is a healthy coping strategy

When we get our blood pumping with proper strength training exercise it benefits every cell, tissue and organ. Oxygen and nutrient rich blood stimulates energy in our body and gives the software in our brain a boost as well. This is why you feel a million dollars after an exercise session.

You can be rejuvenated almost instantly no matter if you are tired, fatigued or stressed. It is virtually impossible to continue feeling these things when you are strong and fit. Try it and see for yourself and let exercise help you feel so much better.

How to Improve Your Health

If you want to be successful in life improve your health and if you want to be happy in life then too improve your health. Unless a person is healthy he is neither able to remain happy nor successful in life. You should take care of your health to enjoy the pleasures of life.

The top priority of a person should always be health. If you are fit and healthy then only can you think of moving ahead in life and maintaining relationships and taking responsibilities.

It is very important for a person to assess his or her physical health. You can see the external problems but you should also know your body from within. If you have some external problem you always go to the doctor to have it checked. But at times when you do not feel good from within and find no symptoms of ill health you do not make an effort to go for a check up. It is here when we create problems for us. Whenever you feel weak or low visit your doctor. You could be facing some health problems which could be tackled easily rather than delaying and making it worse. Your body starts showing symptoms if it is unwell. The symptom could be physical as well as emotional. Never ignore the symptoms your body gives such as falling of the hair, often feeling weak and lethargic and getting irritated fast. These could be indications of serious problems.

Give time to yourself and improve healthcare. There are different ways of improving your health and it only requires a little of your time. You have to learn to be cautious towards your health.

How to improve health?

It is not very difficult. You have to see to what you are eating. Are you eating healthy food or only junk food? Do you take juices, fruits and vegetables in your diet? Is your diet balanced with all the vitamins, minerals and proteins? These are the questions you should often ask yourself and include that food which you do not have at all. You should avoid any kind of deficiency. At times you avoid certain food out of lack of interest and as a result facing health problems.

Overeating is also a factor responsible for an unhealthy body. Obesity is one of the main problems today. To avoid obesity you have to have a controlled diet. Avoid too much of fatty food. Again include juices in your diet. Vegetables juices give you a lot of energy as and at the same time they contain fewer calories. You should include fruits and vegetables in your food.

Exercises are a good way of health care. Exercises keep you physically fit and active. The muscles are strengthened when you exercise and there is proper circulation of blood. You could do any type of exercise such as aerobics, yoga exercise or just do some basic exercises. They not only keep you physically fit but also relieve you from stress.

To improve your health it is very important to improve your lifestyle. What you eat? How you eat? When do you eat? How much do you sleep? These questions tell you much about your lifestyle. When people do not eat healthy, that is they take too much of fatty food, they skip meals, do not have proper timings to eat, do not take much of vegetables and fruits and they do not take proper sleep then we can say that their way of lifestyle is unhealthy. They are the people who often face health problems.

The Power of Mental Health

Mental health is something all of us want for ourselves, whether we know it by name or not. There are no easy answers here - mental fitness is the awkward stepchild you sent away to the state hospital in the country and visited once a year.

In fact good mental health is an integral part of good overall health for people with HIV. Primary Care Mental Condition is a new, peer-reviewed journal on research, education, development and delivery of mental health in primary care. But mental health is far more than merely the absence of mental illness.

Depressions are the greatest Problem

People are four times more likely to break off a romantic relationship if their partner is diagnosed with severe depression than if they develop a physical disability. Overall, the two strongest predictors for thinking about suicide were depression and substance abuse.

Through compelling personal stories told through television, video, the Internet, and print media, the campaign encourages men to recognize depression and its impact on their work, home, and community life. However it will also enable Cam-mind to launch a project designed to help employers tackle stress, anxiety and depression in the workplace. But what's the difference between "normal" feelings of sadness and the feelings caused by depression.

Topics covered vary widely, from healthy self esteem in adolescence and signs of depression to resources for diagnosing mental health problems in children.

Problems about Mental Condition

Those with schizophrenia are particularly likely to face problems: 20% of women said they would break up with a partner who was diagnosed with the condition. The research team have also found that stress at work is associated with a 50 per cent excess risk of coronary heart disease, and there is consistent evidence that jobs with high demands, low control, and effort-reward imbalance are risk factors for mental and physical health problems (major depression, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders).

The Mental Condition and Poverty Project called on the SAHRC to consider setting up a commission that will primarily focus on the needs of people with mental health problems. Even the best-trained psychiatrists do not necessarily have an internship in the problems of normal living. "What many people don't realise is that we all have mental health - just as we have physical health - and that mental health problems can affect anyone, whatever their age or background.

Psychological therapies are based on talking and working with people to understand the causes and triggers of mental health problems and on developing practical strategies to deal with them.

Searching for Information

The first step is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, using targeted public education activities that are designed to provide the public with factual information about mental illnesses and to suggest strategies for enhancing mental fitness, much like anti-smoking campaigns promote physical health.

It therefore makes good sense for people with HIV to have information about the ways in which HIV can affect their mental health and about common mental fitness issues such as depression, anxiety and emotional distress. This comprehensive information resource for child mental Condition and parenting information includes articles, resources, a glossary, an Ask the Expert section, a disorder guide, publications, and FAQs.

Offers useful information explaining educational evaluations, and also lists interventions that may be used to address various mental fitness conditions, including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and more.

Mental Condition is more important than physical health. Mental fitness is more than the absence of mental disorders Mental health can be conceptualized as a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

TAKING A BREAK FROM FITNESS

TAKING A BREAK
I am walking away from fitness!!!  Yes…you heard me… and I am going to enjoy every moment of this week off.  Just like anything else done day in and day out, stepping back and away for a short time and taking a break from what I do daily can rejuvenate my body, mind, and provide a fresh stronger ME when I return…like going on a little vacation from your job and coming back feeling like…YES…I can tackle the world.

There are times that my body feels tired, burned out, and there are days that I, the trainer need to be pushed through a workout…thanks BABE for that!  I also listen to things like…why is my hamstring staying sore and not recovering well, my sleep not the best, and just mentally in need of a break.  YUCK…really…but you know being healthy is not only about how many days I can spend in the gym to push through that hour workout.  Life is truly a balance of the physical, mental, nutritional, and spiritual and if one is out of balance…there is no balance.  Taking a mental and spiritual break is what I am talking about for 7 days…fun active quiet time of doing whatever I feel, whenever I feel…even if that means hanging out under a tree and watching the leaves move through the breeze…you know the things that we all think about doing…but never do…I AM DOING IT!

Also, I am no longer that 20 something athlete who could leap over “small” buildings in a single bound and go go go it seemed without every really taking a break.  This “Older, Wiser, Better” fitness gal is really in tune to her body and I have put some thought into taking this break.  Am I going to throw all my philosophies out the window during this week…of course not!  What I am going to concentrate on is having fun, still being active but in a different way.  My nutrition will be maintained as I always have…that is a lifestyle that to me feels like breathing and I look forward to my healthy meals and enjoy how I feel overall when I eat healthy.

I will tell you that YES…I will struggle and have withdrawals from my norm workouts…maybe even a little anxious about doing this...this is really stepping out of my comfort zone.  On the other hand, I am looking forward to a not so structured time of active rest, one that is not planned and methodically put together, but a spontaneous adventure of let’s say hiking, swimming, playing outside (I am a kid at heart), and things like that.  So, I am taking a break from my norm, but still planning to be a moving girl…I am not just going to sit on my tush, eating crap, and call that quality rest…NOT.

I AM GOING TO HAVE FUN!  Life is about balance and listening to the call of rest, relaxation, and just being in the moment of who I am outside the gym.  I have reprogrammed my thinking to know that this will be good for my body and the rejuvenation fabulous for strength and muscle gains.  I am not going to freak out or feel guilty as the “old” Darla did for living life outside my normal day to day…I mean really.  Thank goodness, I am no longer that chickie. I know that my body will not turn into a marshmallow, become cellulite ridden, and my muscle disappear into nothing…really…come on now…NO WAY.  It would take me at least 3 weeks of inactivity as an extremely fit exerciser to start a decline in my fitness level, and muscle memory lasts for months…so this chick is covered and “Good to Go” for this 7 day rest adventure.

I do know that I will appreciate being in the moment as I frolic about in the water, being outdoors around beautiful scenery and just laying on my back under the stars taking in the wonders of everything that is life…FABULOUS!  I will feel my body resting, recharging so to speak, and know that when I return to my programmed workouts, it will be with even a stronger and more positive MENTAL and PHYSICAL game.  Guilt Free Fun…HERE I COME!!!
